Over 200 years ago, Slave Trade overshadowed Zanzibar but today, the history of this dark past is long forgotten. Today, Zanzibar is one of the leading tourist destinations in East Africa with beautiful white sandy beaches, comfortable boutiques, villas, hotels, resorts and lodge establishments.

Zanzibar which currently stands as a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, once served as the center point of Slave Trade in East Africa. At the time, Slavery became the most profitable of the numerous economic activities in Zanzibar Island.

The historic Indian Ocean Slave Trade was mainly controlled by the Arab Slave Traders. The Arab Slave Trade evolved first before the Islam and lasted for a millennium. In order to meet the high demand for slaves, the slavers had to trade, bribe chiefs and even kidnap people. The Slave Traders moved from Bagamoyo up-to Congo and the newly got slaves could be forced to carry ivory and other goods back to Bagamoyo.

Bagamoyo is derived from a Kiswahili word – “Baga Moyo” meaning “Lay down your heart”. The slaves were transferred to Zanzibar using wooden boats also popular as dhows. Several of the slaves couldn’t survive on their way to Zanzibar and while those who managed to get to final destination were stripped naked and their bodies covered with coconut oil. They were also forced to put gold and silver bracelets with Slave Trader’s name. It was during such a time when slaves were forced to march in the line along Stone Town streets while guarded by loyal slaves of the slavers.

The term Arab in Arab Slave Trade context signifies a culture not as others consider it to be a race. Most of the Arab Slave Traders like Tippu Tip and others were hard to be differentiated from the Africans they had enslaved and sold. All the top racial groups in Zanzibar engaged in Slave Trade in one way or the other. Over 40000 to 50000 slaves were taken to Zanzibar each year and 3rd of them were used to work on the clove & coconut plantations in Zanzibar and Pemba.

During Slavery in Zanzibar, the Arabs were mainly the traders while African rulers sold prisoners taken in battle. Though Zanzibar is today popular as an Island Haven, several prominent reminders of the dark Slave Trade history still exist at Stone Town and whole of Zanzibar. The Omani Arabs who controlled Zanzibar applied what they described as a ‘culture of violence’, which mainly implied use of force as solution to problems.

The slaves were confined in dark place, airless, underground chambers before they were sold. The market today still features the chains bolted to the concrete. A moving memorial today exists where the market was previously found which reminds travelers and local residents of the atrocities that were committed from here years back.

The Anglican Church nearby, comprises of a wooden cross carved from the tree where David Livingston’s heart was buried in Zambia. He was a popular explorer and abolitionist. On the Coast of Zanzibar Island, there still exist many ancient limestone holding cells where slaves were hidden from crusading British abolitionists. Upon banning of slavery, the use of the chambers increased and some still hold etchings and final messages most slaves left as they awaited sale and transportation to a foreign land.

The Omani Arabs signed ‘The Moresby Treaty’ in 1822. This made slave trade illegal to Christians and the treaty also included several other restrictions. However, the restrictions were often ignored and the traders continued selling slaves. In 1873, the Sultan Barghash was forced to sign an edict following the threat of bombardment by the British Navy and this is what led the sea-borne slave trade illegal and slave market in Zanzibar then closed.

While slavery/slave trade became illegal on the mainland of Tanzania, it continued till the defeat of the Germans in World War I and Britain’s success making it the colonial power.

Stone Town is truly the cultural and historic heart of Zanzibar – Tanzania, located just along the western shores. This dubbed Old Town is incredibly the perfect example of the Swahili Coastal Towns / Trading Centers on the East African coast, built during ancient Trade and Exchange era between Africa and Asia, Arabia.

When it comes to classic hotels and restaurants, no place beats Zanzibar-Tanzania. Zanzibar boasts of its outstanding hotel, boutique and restaurant facilities and interestingly, The Rock Restaurant never goes unmentioned when it comes to Zanzibar holidays! Sitting in the beautiful Indian Ocean waters, The Rock has become Zanzibar’s iconic site. It is undeniably an Ultimate Restaurant Facility noted for its most stunning views over the Indian Ocean.

The Rock Restaurant is one of the very few magical restaurants in the world set on seemingly a ‘floating’ Rock island but in reality, it is just a rock. The then mere outpost for fishermen has become Zanzibar’s iconic site today! Visit The Rock and discover the world-class dining experience. Given its location, The Rock Restaurant is best described as a ‘Floating’ Restaurant and if you love taking pictures or you are interested in the fresh seafood, local cuisines or fresh natural foods, then you are at a right place.

Location.

The Rock Restaurant is suitably found in Michamvi Pingwe Beach, South-East Peninsula of Zanzibar. The Michamvi Beach is a calm and stunning stretch of white sand beaches. Visitors around Nungwi in the North can reach the Rock Restaurant within 2 hours’ drive. From Paje/Jambiani, the Rock Restaurant is about 15 minutes’ drive, an hour’s drive from Stone Town and 1 hour 30 minutes’ drive from Matemwe(southeast).

At The Rock Restaurant, food is at its best taste – guaranteeing all travelers a unique dining experience of all sorts of natural and fresh foods to well-prepared cuisines. It is incredibly a charming and exclusive restaurant built in 2010 in Zanzibar, perfectly decorated in local island style. The Rock Restaurant is an amazing place to experience the best seafood, local cuisines. It plays a significant role in the lives of local fishermen and farmers at Michamvi Village.

The Rock Restaurant is also environmentally conscious by ensuring that minimal environmental impact. The restaurant is open to couples and group travelers of up to 20pax. It comes with an open air terrace, guaranteeing you the most romantic evening with your dear one, enjoy the clear start during the night with blue skies during the day and above all, the panoramic seascapes. It is also a perfect place to book for all special events or if you plan to have private parties.

When to visit Rock Restaurant

The Rock Restaurant can be visited at any time of the year and the best time entirely depends on visitors’ travel interests. If you visiting The Rock soon, what is essential to bear in mind is basically the tides which tend to vary significantly. In the morning, the tides can move extremely far away and you can look at the Rock just alone.

This makes it easier to just take a walk up to the restaurant. The tides begin to return later in the course of the day. When the tides are high, you can take a boat ride.

Getting to The Rock Restaurant.

Located in Michamwi Pingwe Peninsula, the Rock Restaurant is accessible on foot at low tide, and at high tide visitors can reach the restaurant by boat. Interestingly, you can make your day more romantic by embarking on a boat ride around the rock. The Rock Restaurant is strategically located in that during the low tide, the water can move from the restaurant hence exposing corals, rocks, sand and seaweeds which makes it easier for you to just walk up-to the restaurant.

Unlike during the high tide, the area floods but comes with stunning blue and turquoise colors. Once you get to the rock, you can climb into the restaurant using the ladder.

Zanzibar is a combination of different islands and part of the Republic of Tanzania. Any tourist visiting Tanzania would like to fly, sail or boat ride to Zanzibar and enjoy the different holiday experiences, but most importantly to relax and rewind within the blue sea and clean white sandy beaches. Zanzibar is also known as Unguja but the natives seem and behave more like Zanzibaris even when they are part of Tanzania government. They have their governing structure and elect their own leaders.

Most of the people in Zanzibar are Muslims and this is because of the early settlers-Arabs who were traders. They settled and stayed at the coast for a long time after overthrowing the Portuguese who were again overthrown by the British. The main language used here is Swahili, but also Arabic and English are widely used.

Due to intermarriages between the foreigners or settlers-Arabs and the Africans, there is a mixture of cultures, architectural designs, cuisine and language. This means that, on the visit of this island, there is a lot to enjoy ranging from physical structures, people, landscape, serenity, weather and so much more.

Stone Town Tour.

This historical town gives a spectacular sight as all buildings give great views and nice architecture made from coral stones. While on a walk visiting the town with an expert local guide, you will visit the Slave Market, House Of wonders, Old dispensary, Cathedral of the Anglican Church and several mosques among others. Also visit the local markets where most organic food products are sold such as fresh fruits, spices among others; also take a visit to old Fort which was used as a protecting site of the town.

Prison Island or Changuu Island.

This was used by Arabs as a prison for the resistant or rebellious slaves during the slave trade error. Changuu Island was also used as a quarantine area for people who contracted the yellow fever. Afterwards, it was turned into a very important tourist site upon introduction of giant Aldabra tortoises. It is also a good resort to chill and have a meal while watching the shimmering waters of Indian Ocean.

Spice Tour.

Take a tour to the gardens of different spices such as ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, garlic, among others. Learn more about the uses, how to mix them and also have a chance to taste some of them if you so wish. Visiting Zanzibar and miss touring spices Gardens is like you have not reached this island.

Jozani Forest / Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park.

With its unique primate residents – the Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, butterflies, bird species and plant species, taking a nature walk in this park is the best way to explore. Remember, this is the only national park and forest in Zanzibar and so it gives the best experience on your visit.

Day Visit to Bounty Beaches.

Zanzibar has beautiful beaches in the whole world and some good for sunset while others have good concentration of dolphins. Therefore, you can relax at the beach, swim, sunbathe or even taking snorkeling and be able to swim with the dolphins. For the tourist who loves to take a boat cruise, here comes an opportunity to enjoy the sunset which will be a great photographic moment. The beaches include Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe, Kiwengwa, Pwani Mchangani, Paje beaches among others.

Take a cultural tour.

Learn the Swahili language, cooking Swahili dishes such as Pilau, biryani, Ugali, Samaki wa kupaka and so much more. All you need to know is that the traditional foods are normally spiced and for those with ulcers and other complications may not favor you. Learning some Swahili phrases is a good addition to your cultural. Most common phrases here are Jambo (Hello), karibu (welcome), Asante (thanks), Hakuna Shida (no problem), sawa (OK), chakula (food) among others.

Best time to visit Zanzibar.

For tourists willing to explore more than the listed above experiences, you need to know the best time when you will be able to take the safari to this beautiful island. The archipelago can be visited all year round but the best time will be December to February and June to October when hot and dry.

This time makes it possible and easy hence enjoyable to do or engage in all activities without unsuspected hindrances like rains, water levels and poor roads.

Zanzibar, a paradise of beauty and love with fresh air, exotic beaches, breathtaking sceneries, unrivaled accommodation, a mix of culture, enchanting wild, turquoise–blue waters and lip-smacking sea foods, etc.; if not Zanzibar then what other destination are you thinking of?

First, the location alone should be one motivator, before thinking of the history, weather, security, mix of modern, ancient and traditional art, as well as the hospitable people who treat visitors as their own; talking, eating, and walking with them. Zanzibar Island is a calm and unique destination by the shores of giant Indian Ocean, east of Tanzania in east Africa. Zanzibar Island is beautiful, decorated by ancient Arab, British, and African architecture. Islam is the dominant religion but is never in conflict with Christians or traditionalists.

The islanders have a unique rhythm of life, time and vibe. The dominant language is Kiswahili (Swahili), but English and Arabic can be widely used. The rich history of spice trade that made the name turned to the spice island and then slave trade as it was as a famous slave market never fades. You have reasons to pick Zanzibar for your next safari destination; be it in time for a honeymoon, summer holiday, winter break, family retreat or a simple weekend with extension of short wildlife trips; thanks to our recent introduction of day trips to most of the Tanzania (Main Land) National Parks like Saadani, Mkomazi, Selous, Mikumi, Serengeti among others.

But Why Visit Zanzibar?

Exotic Beaches and Hotels.

The calm white sandy beaches of Zanzibar are what everyone out to a vacation needs and acknowledges. These are spread by the coastline of Indian Ocean. They are open for swimming, water sports, kayaking, windsurfing, dolphin tour, diving, snorkeling, water skiing and relaxation. The lodges are as well of standard, with great amenities and offering classic services.

Cool weather.

Perfect warm weather it is, admirable and cool. Yours might be also good, but this is what is needed. Day or night, you can relax and breathe in the fresh air, and cool breeze, with an assurance of no much heat. Zanzibar lies off the equator. Wet months run from April to May, but not so much.

Lip-smacking traditional cuisine and seafood.

It won’t be an understatement or lie if someone suggests Zanzibar for a picnic, party or dinner meet-up for the sake of its delicacies. Just giving a tongue a new taste is important, especially the kinds of seafood, and those made prepared in the local restaurants. The spicy rice, kingfish, clams, Pilau, octopus, fried oysters, etc. all with an attractive aroma.

Diverse History and Culture.

Life in Zanzibar is not exaggerated, from the dressing cord, food, and architecture. Zanzibar is the place to be; a cosmopolitan island, with a variety of cultural heritage and history that dates back to over 20,000 years.

The mark left by slave trade, Arab and British dominance and spice plantation is clear; with the traditional houses, mosques and museums. Explore the stone town, house of wonders, Persian bath tab, Prison Island, former slave trade markets and fishing villages among others.

Hospitality and fun.

Zanzibar is a place full of life, laughter, and fun. Once on the island, you get swallowed up by the Rhythm of life, music and so much more. There is a mix of friendly people, ready to party and make each hour of the visit unforgettable. Forodhani Gardens offer a vibrant weekend vibe and nightlife.

Taste of Spice.

Are you a fun of spices or need to know about it? Zanzibar reveals a whole world of spices, including Nutmeg, lemongrass, turmeric, black paper and cloves among others? A spice plantation tour takes center stage at the lush plantations; with the guides picking the spices and explaining their use. Visitors get to enjoy the Aroma, the walk and the lessons.

Primate Adventure.

This is a great place to entangle with the primates in their natural habitat. The Zanzibar Red Colobus monkeys are the dominant residents, so rare and friendly. At Jozani chwaka bay national park; the only park on the island you get to encounter and know the life of monkeys.

Accessing Zanzibar Island.

Zanzibar Island is accessible on water or air from all over Africa. There are flights from Johannesburg in South Africa, Nairobi & Mombasa in Kenya, or Kilimanjaro and Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania.

It is also possible to use a ferry to the island from main land Tanzania. Moving around the island is possible, easy and transportation is available at different prices that best fit every traveler’s budget.

Everything in Zanzibar gives a reason enough for one to pay a visit. We guarantee anyone who visitors this island a safe stay, great moments and unforgettable leisure experiences.

Visitors interested in learning about butterflies during an East African Holiday can visit the Zanzibar Butterfly Center, home to different species of beautiful and awe-inspiring butterflies especially the ones endemic to Zanzibar. Tours to this Center are perfect for family tours with children, school tours, domestic and foreign tourists. Hundreds of butterflies are drawn to Zanzibar Island because of its beautiful Tropical climate as well as lush vegetation including beautiful flowers, and the perfect place to see them is this amazing Butterfly Center.

Zanzibar Butterfly Center is set within the heart of Unguja Island, a stone throw away from Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park. Characterized by a vast lush Tropical Garden marked by net walls as well as roof. Touring the area introduces visitors to the different life cycle stages of several butterfly species that also include a number of irresistible cocoons. Some of the must-see species of butterflies here are the forest grass yellow, African giant swallowtail, green banded swallowtail, Citrus swallowtail, Eastern white lady swordtail and African monarch butterfly among others.

Location of the Zanzibar Butterfly Center.

The beautiful Butterfly Center of Zanzibar is set near the main road, on the way to Paje, close to Pete Village. At about 1.2 miles west of the entrance of well-signposted Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, you will be ushered to this Butterfly Center.

Riveting activities conducted at the Zanzibar Butterfly Center.

Guided butterfly tours.

Guided butterfly tours are definitely the main tourist activity at the Zanzibar Butterfly Center and normally take between 30 and 40 minutes although the time can be tailor-made to suit each individual visitor’s needs. Get a chance to check-out the World of these creatures in Zanzibar as you discover their different stages-small eggs, hungry caterpillars gnawing away at the leaves and the beautiful process of changing from Larvae (caterpillars) to adult butterflies.

Farmer’s Tours.

Besides the guided butterfly tours, visitors can also take part in Farmer’s tours to interact with the local butterfly farmers in addition to observing and admiring the complexity of their handcraft. Profits from both butterfly and farmer tours are put back into community development through supporting farming training, provision of micro-loans to set up their businesses and growing other alternative tree species to reduce deforestation. With revenue from these activities, the Zanzibar Butterfly Center has also funded a number of water tanks, wells and also works hand in hand with several charity organizations within the area.

Up to 40 farmers from Pete Village are registered to take part in butterfly farming and this helps in the diversification of their income. The activity is mainly conducted by women because they can easily undertake the activities concurrently with their house chores and child care activities.

Best time to visit the Zanzibar Butterfly Center.

Tours to the Zanzibar Butterfly Center are conducted all year round and morning as well as afternoon hours are the perfect for exploring the area. The months of May to July as well as December to January attracts most Lepidopterists.

Best places to stay while exploring Zanzibar Butterfly Center.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC.

This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
